Surly Furious and Summit EPA. No surprises there, I'm sure. For years I've answered the desert island only one beer question with "Summit" and I still feel that way.

But those are the beers that I share with out-of-towners to brag about the local beer.

As this is primarily a local website, I'd put a vote in for Surly's Furious. For a summer brew, I'm particularly fond of Summit's Scandia Ale, which is a good rendition of a belgian wit.

Craft Beer Drinkers!

We had several large shipments last Friday with some new and very exciting beers amongst them. Some of them are completely new others are old favorites.

Saint Somewhere brewing company:

Saison Athene and Lectio Divina ( Abbey style strong ale). The Saison is one of the most impressive Saisons I’ve been lucky enough to try. It’s amazing! Organically grown chamomile, rosemary, and Tellicherry black pepper spice the Saison de Athene. They also add a touch of Bruxellensis ( wild yeast).

Avery - Ale To The Chief
A super hopped up Pale Ale ( Dry hopped as well) 8.7% ABV
22 oz bombers in stock now!

Meantime IPA and Scotch Ale
http://www.artisanalimports.com/page13/page13.html
These were part of a “pre order” I placed a month ago, they’re final here! Limited quantities.

Grotten Flemish Ale – 7.7% ABV
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/259/30366
You love the Grotten brown, come and try this offering from the same brewery.

Urthel – Tripel – 9%ABV
http://www.artisanalimports.com/page9/page9.html

Neuzeller - Bath Beer
Yup, the Germans used to Bath in this beer. The back of the label says “ Sip one while you take a bath or do what we do and add it directly to the bath water!” You may ask “Why?”

I think the better question is “Why not?”

And finally after a long wait I have more of the White Winter Black Harbor back in stock. A fortified Mead brewed with Black Currants and Honey then Oak aged. 21% ABV this is truly amazing stuff.
https://www.whitewinterwinery.com/scart/product_details.asp?ItemNum=1006

I like to drink beer that harks back to a time when men walked into a bar with blood on their Axe. Or when monks continued tending their brews as the townships around them burned with invaders flames. I wonder what men like that would think of Budweiser?

Craft Beer Drinkers and Friends,

Another shipment of beer arrived on Friday with some new beers amongst it. Here’s a quick list of the more interesting things. Last week when I sent a list like this almost everything mentioned sold out in the next two days. If you want to try some of these rarer beers you’ll have to get here quickly!

Scaldis Prestige.

Belgian Amber Ale aged in Oak for Six months. 13% ABV - four bottles only.
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/604/21197

Bieres 23 – French Country Amber Ale.
http://www.bieres-23.com/beers.html

Dulle Teve – Tripel
http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/de-dolle-dulle-teve-10%C2%BA-mad-bitch/6875/

Haand Bryggeriet – Dark Force
A wheat stout, 9% ABV
http://www.haandbryggeriet.net/Regulars.html

I was able to get a few cases at a slightly discounted price so I have 750ml bottles of Pater Lieven Tripel at $6.99 and 750ml bottles of Zinnebir Xmas Ale also at $6.99 per bottle.

Due to popular demand I now stock Fullers ESB and London Pride, both are on the shelves right now. I also got in some Sheaf Stout for my Aussie mates!

Cheers!

Remember - Friends don't let friends drink bad beer.

Craft beer drinkers and friends,

Another very interesting shipment of beer has turned up at the Firkins. I especially love it when 40 cases of beer arrive and I've never seen half of them before!

Here's a little list of some of the more interesting things:

1809 - Berliner Weisse:
This is a very hard to find German style of Sour Wheat Beer. Citrusy and light just like a Hefe but refreshingly sour at the same time. One case only, don't miss out!
http://www.bunitedint.com/portfolios/producers/historic_series/berliner_weisse/overview.php

Southern Tier - Creme Brulee Stout.
A brand new one from Southern Tier this is a 10% ABV Stout brewed with Vanilla beans.
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/3818/43687

Mikkeller Monks Brew.
A Belgian Style Quad brewed with Candy syrup and brown sugar. 10% ABV
http://www.mikkeller.dk/Ollet_munk_GB.html

Chocarrubica
An Italian Stout brewed with Cacao and Carob, 7%abv.
http://www.bunitedint.com/portfolios/producers/grado_plato/chocarrubica/overview.php

Malthus
Italian Ale brewed with Chestnut meal and honey. 6.5% ABV
http://www.bunitedint.com/portfolios/producers/birrificio_como/birolla/overview.php

Old Odense Ale.
Ale brewed with Star Anise, black thorn berries, maple syrup and herbs. 7.5% ABV

Lurgashall Vintage Mead.
One for the Mead lover in all of us, this is the 2007 vintage aged in oak. 16.5% ABV
http://www.bunitedint.com/portfolios/producers/lurgashall/special_reserve/overview.php

Don't forget the Unibroue tasting event tonight at the store, be here at 6pm sharp if you plan to come as it will be a class format. No cost, it's free, just turn up with a smile and an open palate!

Cheers!

Here’s a quick list of the Rare and New beers at The Four Firkins this week.
De Molen Rasputin – Imperial Stout.

http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/de-molen-rasputin/75845/

I was only able to get one case of these and two are gone already, four left. Other
De Molen beers that arrived this week include:
De Molen Storm & Damage – Double IPA,
De Molen Porter,
De Molen Triple Stout.
De Molen Pek & Veren (( Tar and Feather)Stout)

We got a heap of other new and hard to find stuff this week as well. Such as the Guldenberg Tripel - http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/739/3442

And a great little Scottish by the name of “Wee Beast” http://www.sheltonbrothers.com/beers/beerProfile.asp?BeerID=120

The beer I’m personally most excited about is the Ridgeway IPA, this is an English IPA, a bottle conditioned beer made with whole hop flowers. This is not and American IPA, it is NOT a massively hopped up west coast monster, if you are a hop head you may even be disappointed with this beer. It’s a mellow British version that is indicative of the original style. Very tasty!

http://www.sheltonbrothers.com/beers/beerProfile.asp?BeerID=170

This IPA will not be on the shelves with the rest of them, you’ll have to ask for it as I have only 10 of them and they will be highly sought after!
The really good news? I have even more new stuff coming next week!
Hope to see you at the Firkins soon.

Alvey

I'm wondering if anyone out there knows where you can get some of the Well's Banana Bread beer off-sale. Had some at the Blue Nile last night and it would make a perfect addition to the beer fridge.

Anyone actually seen it anywhere?

Will Do!

I have family just north of Fergus Falls, so I'll have to try to get down there for that one.

Have any tips on how to get plugged into the local beer scene?

I'm a bit disappointed that I missed a tasting at a local liquor store a while back. Guess I need to make up some buisness cards for the homebrew club and get them out to the local establishments.

I have the Homebrewer's Festival in Fergus Falls on my agenda and we listed a few of Doug Hoverson's outstate events earlier in the year. That being said, surely there are more events and we have no problem listing anything we get.

Thanks!

I think MNBeer.com is great, but what about us not in the metro area?

Granted, the greater MN beer scene isn't the greatest, but there's got to be things going on that are worth mentioning.

What can I do to help?

The last few weeks, and for many more to come hopefully, I am "Pilgrimaging" to the Surly Brewery via bike for growlers on Saturdays. Beer just tastes that much sweeter (bitterer) if you carry it miles from the point of production to your home with it strapped to your back.

Pulled from SurlyBrewing.com

Apr 01, 2008

Omar Ansari and Augie Busch 9th, are pleased to announce that Surly Brewing Company will now have its beer distributed nation-wide by AB. "It's a great opportunity for Surly to leverage the vaunted AB distributiuon network and get our beer across the country. We're really really excited not to have enough beer not only for our own market, but markets all over the country!" says a amped up Ansari. St. Louis based AB will be purchasing a majority share of Surly Brewing Company but has no plans to make any changes. "We plan to stay pretty hands-off" says Augie the 9th. "We will only tell Surly what to brew and how to brew it. The cross-mojination potential is great for AB, we look forward to using Surly's great hype machine and gettting fanboys across the country buzzing about AB!"
In related news, Surly Brewing Company announces plans to can Bitter Brewer.

NOT COOL!!

Buy a styrofoam shipper and check it as luggage on the way back. Apparently it works great though I have never tried it myself. I always ship my stuff back via my favorite non-USPS shipping method.

When shipping "glassware" or "yeast samples" via UPS, lots of bubblewrap is your friend! :) Of course the containers designed for the "beer of the month club" sort of thing are probably even better.

I'm heading to Northern Cali in June and was hoping to bring back a bunch of, oh, Stone, Firestone, Russian River, and shit I've never heard of. Does anyone have a piece of luggage designed for shipping bottles, either via checked luggage air or via UPS, that they would want to lend me for a weekend? Of course some of the slots would be for your choice of beverage. Email me at ehaugee at yahoo dot com.

Hi guys,

Wow, this is proving to be quite a process! The NE location is officially toast, it's a real shame as that would have been a great place for it.

Anyway, the new location will be St. Louis Park. We have a building in the works, city zoning is making sure the parking is adequate and then we can hand in the liquor license application which will take about 7 weeks. Once that is approved it'll take about three weeks to get in there and do the build out and then...it'll be open.

I never would have thought it would be so difficult to get a suitable location for something like this and have it approved. The amount of politics and red tape involved is absolutely staggering. It's been a huge learning curve.

When we recorded the episode of What Ale's Thee that talks about it I thought it was pretty much ready to go. What I thought would be a minor delay turned into a two month long ordeal which ultimately turned out to be nothing but a total waste of time.

So far the SLP location has none of these problems and it all looks like it will go as smoothly as these things can.

As soon as the liquor license is in process I'll let you know exactly where it is. The countdown begins...

I'm glad to hear people are still excited about it and I look forward to serving you very soon!

Alvey
