Beer Lovers,
Tickets are now available for the seminars to be held in conjunction with The Muddy Pig’s Belgian Beer Festival.
Session 1: Friday, September 12 @ 5:00pm. Belgian Beer Styles
Session 2: Saturday, September 13 @ Noon. True Lambics
Session 3: Sunday, September 14 @ Noon. Belgian Beer Culture
Each seminar will be hosted by a Belgian beer authority, will last about 1 hour and will include samples. The cost is $20 per session or $50 for all three. Space is very limited and all sessions will likely sell out quickly.
The Pig will be open normal business hours throughout the weekend and we will be serving over 40 different Belgian and Belgian-style beers on draft.
So Surly has a new beer hitting the scene, Surly Hell, a Munich Helles. This is certainly old news to anyone that either regularly checks out the Brewer’s Blog over at Surly Brewing, or anyone who was at the Great Taste of the Midwest. Clearly, I’m not one of those.
From the Brewer’s Blog:
Walk with me in Hell
Aug 02, 2008
Ok not really a walk, but a drink of Surly Hell!
Sandy, Beaner and I brewed a single batch of a Munich Helles.
Basically a German style light lager….yea…yea …..Surly Light…get it?
Check it out at the Great Taste in Madison next weekend.
Draft only, so look for this beer at your favorite Surly draft bar in a couple/three weeks.
I know no one wants to think about winter and Christmas and all that rigmarole when summer is in full force but there are some times, like this one, when it just might benefit you or your craft beer drinking friends or family.
Vine Park is offering a Year of Beer Growler Punch card. For $100 one can purchase 12 growler fills for themselves or someone they love. So when you get around to thinking about gifts, keep this in mind for that special someone or let Santa know you’d be one happy camper if this was waiting for you.
I have not called to confirm this, but it looks like All American Grill and Brewhouse, Waverly, MN, finally has their first Ugly Tree Brewery offering on tap, Ugly Red (is Ugly Light on tap as well???), according to their website. I’ll call to confirm this and to get an idea for the timing of new offerings in the next day or two. We first posted about All American over a year ago and their opening was in November. Early comments about their menu were generally positive. Of course, now we can really discuss the one thing that matters (besides grilled meat, that is), beer. I’ve been itching to head out there to visit the place, but ‘za and burgers alone are not enough to motivate me. If anyone has actually had one of their beers and can confirm the existence, please let me know. This will kind of be my “photo of Bigfoot stuffed in someone’s chest freezer” moment.

Chad Bacon, self-described “licensed pseudo meteorologist” at Town Hall is reporting a major summer Thunderstorm headed our way next week. If I recall from similar past weather events, it usually involves copius amounts of honey, orange peel, lemongrass and Belgian candy sugar, but it does tend to knock one senseless, so maybe my memory isn’t serving me correctly. I’ll leave it to the professionals to describe:
The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the following counties, Carver, Anoka, Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington. Doppler radar and trained weather spotters have observed rotation with baseball size hail and winds in excess of 85 mph. The track of the storm has followed a path from Meeker through Kandiyohi counties with a straight easterly track. This storm is extremely dangerous capable of producing a swath of misery, silliness and frivolity, simply taking shelter is not an option. The National Weather Service strongly recommends enjoying a cool pull, good friends and a quiet prayer as this life altering event approaches. The damage of this storm will be massive, so please join weather geeks, at Town Hall on the 18th at 5:00pm. It is not a matter of if the T-Storm will hit it is a matter of when.

I ran into an alarmed blog post or two (via east-lake.net) regarding the PedalPub and it’s fate in Minneapolis. I dropped Al a line to check on this and you’ll be glad to know that the hearing was actually just a meeting to discuss regulating the PedalPub. Al says there are no changes in store for now, and probably nothing until next year. He also mentioned that creating regulations will be a collaboration between the city and the PedalPub that he expects “will go smoothly and professionally.”Fear not pedalers!

Michael Agnew, founder of A Perfect Pint will host a beer battle royale at The Four Firkins on Tuesday, August 19th at 6:00pm. Email alvey AT thefourfirkins.com with “Wheat Wars” in the subject line to register. There are only 35 spots, so register now.
Here is Michael’s description of the event:
“Wheat! One of the oldest cultivated cereal grains. The earliest beers from brewing’s dim history were almost certainly made with wheat. In the modern brewing world, this most basic of grains has inspired divergent brewing traditions in different parts of the
globe. For your consideration; the opaque banana and clove of the German Hefeweizen, the delicate citrus and spice of the Belgian Wit, and the clean, bready, more assertively hopped American Wheat. What factors combine to produce the perfect wheat beer? What sets these three distinct styles, all based in this ancient grain, apart? The lines have been drawn for an epic battle of the beers. Three wheat styles and six wheat beers. Which will emerge victorious from the crucible of Firkin Forum. You will be the judge. Let the Wheat Wars begin!”
