Just in case Al and company at the Blue Nile didn’t pour enough Surly Darkness for you this evening, you’ll find it at Cafe Twenty Eight, The Happy Gnome and Groveland Tap and probably other places as well.

Had a 10 oz pour last night at the Tap. This year, Darkness appears to be a little different formulation; a little more chocolate-and-hops, a little full-bodied. It nonetheless has all of the heavy, roasty backbone to balance the boatload of hops in each glass. Lovely beer. Only problem is the Tap’s tendency to pour every single beer at around 38 degrees.
I hope to have a second glass before it goes away.
I thought maybe it had slightly less hops then last year. Omar said it was the hop shortage at work….he may have been spinning me a yarn though. Either way its most awesome.
It might have had less hops than last year (actually, that makes some sense), but to me, the way it was formulated made it put the hops flavor much more forward than last.
Good American hop nose as well.
I had some Darkness at Stubs today….$7.50 for an 10 oz glass. I dont mind paying that much for it, but sure wish i had more monies…I know it didnt cost that last year, but once again im guessing the hop/malt prices are hitting us.
$6.50 for the same at the Tap. Won’t argue. Far better than $7 for pumpkin ale at the Gnome.
at the Nile we do 12 ounce pours…for $6.66!!!
if you paid cash on Tuesday, you paid $6.50…I don’t have enough small change just for a jokie price.
Yeah, malt prices are jumping because so many farmers are going nutty about ethanol and hops prices have jumped as well… I spoke with someone recently that said that case prices (I think that’s production cost, but don’t hold me to it) were going up $1 for a semi-hoppy pale ale. Ramp that up to 100 IBU and add more alcohol and you can bet that beer is getting more spendy.
I just hope this doesn’t push any of the small guys out of business.
Well I went ot the Gnome tonight and paid 7 bucks for a pint. Regardless the cost , im a big fan. i do like that the Nile is charging 6.66 though!
That’s one hell of a deal at $7/pint, even though I would prefer it in different glassware.
they don’t like the Darkness goblets that come with every keg?

The Gnome had the Darkness goblets, but the woman bartender that served me didnt get the memo to serve them in them. I noticed that when other bartenders poured, it was in the Goblet. Anyway, I wouldnt count on receiving a pint there usually. oh yeah, mnspeak seems to have a real interlectual following. ack.
Had Darkness at Buster’s last night. It was grrrreat. I do not recall what I paid. It was served in the surly goblet.
MNspeak, is a troll mecca. People post things that they think are interesting or cool, the raptors/regular commenters show up and rip it to shreds, then the thread devolves into right vs. left political bomb throwing. Yuck.
