Smoke in a Bottle

That’s right, a plan is in the works from our boys at Surly to begin bottling Smoke, [edit: with more than 4000 bottles] ending up on liquor store shelves. I guess that new bottler is getting quite a work out!

Nic Skrade at Uptown Tattoo did the art work, Al McCarty of Blue Nile fame wrote the text, but final label approval is pending from the, er, good folks at the TTB.  So….release date TBA.

More details as they roll in…but really, what else do you need to know?!

  1. Trav says:

Cool. I love rauch/smoke beers. This could be an actual rauchbier, as its a lager. The smoke aspect seems to vary a good bit from the times I have had it. Sometimes I think its way smokey, while other times I could barely detect any hint of smoke.

  2. beerfan says:

Would any of you think it was ironic if I were to say: Woot! 😉

What’s the bottle run on this? Will it be hard to get?

  3. Eric says:

More than 4000, just updated the post 🙂

  4. beerfan says:

So it shouldn’t be extremely hard to get?

  5. Trav says:

Easier then Darkness anyway, only 2500 of those went out.

  6. beerfan says:

Yeah, but didn’t most of those go to one store in Brooklyn Park?

  7. Chris says:

The Haskell’s in White Bear had two cases, if that’s any help at all. 🙂

  8. Trav says:

Im not sure exactly how many went to BC liquors. No matter the case, this should be easier to get.

  9. Nick says:

How about that, I was just searching the Surly website today, to see if they are releasing bottles of Smoke, and was disappointed to see that is kegs only.

Speakling of Smoke, how about a “where’s Smoke” post so people can find it @ bars? I’ll start:

    Cafe 28
    Common Roots
Brasa St. Paul (not sure if still there)

  10. Matt says:

Damn good beer, and it’ll be nice to have a couple of bottles around.

  11. Ben says:

Just had 2 glasses of Smoke with Fischer’s Farm Pork in Adobo at Cafe Twenty-Eight. Awesome pairing. I highly recommend it.

  12. al says:

Add Blue Nile to the list (where I thought it’d be cool to cut’n’paste my label copy onto the tap menu, until I read it and the irony revealed itself).

  13. coozies says:

I am really impressive with your post.
    It is so special.
It is the most interesting post I have read !

  14. Jono says:

For anyone else looking to find Smoke on tap: Grumpy’s on Washington has it as well, just had some yesterday.

  15. Chip W. says:

As the risk of being called out for loving Surly – I can’t wait.

  16. Doug Hardy says:

How do we get this in San Francisco? I miss Surly since I moved here.

  17. digit3 says:

I had it on Saturday (late morning) at Acadia Cafe on the west bank. I thought that it was decent if not subdued for the usually over-the-top Surly offerings. I recently had a Schlenkerla Weizen (bottled) and was burping smoke all day! I could hardly taste the smoked malt in the Surly.

  18. Trav says:

Schlenkerla Urbock is one of my fav. beers of all time. Ive only had the 09 Smoke at D day, and I thought it was way more smokey then last years batch. Ill have to try it on tap somewhere.

  19. Matt says:

The subtle smoke is what I like about this beer. I hate overly smokey beers, I actually dumped 1.5 bottles of Furthermores Three Feet Deep.

  20. digit3 says:

I like subtle smoke too. Just didn’t expect it from Surly!

  21. Ben says:

Acadia serves it up pretty damn cold (others do too). Need to give it about 15-20 minutes to warm (bar staff even were recommending it when I stopped by for Darkness). Didn’t have much in the way of a smoked flavor at the release party at Brasa but I’ve had it a couple times since (several at Cafe Twenty-Eight) and the smoked flavor has come out a lot more.

  22. al says:

there’s the trusted had-cupping method (says someone also guilty of serving it too cold)

  23. al says:

  24. Ben says:

I do a lot of hand cupping to warm my glasses. Maybe it’s time to invest in the 20 pairs of hand warmers for $15.,334061,1073935

  25. al says:

Lately, I’ve been warming glasses with hot water from the coffee machine…if I have time to walk over there and back.
