Surly at Paddle Fest

Surly Brewing is once again sponsoring an extreme sports festival up in Sandstone, MN. The 2nd Annual Kettle River Paddlefest is happening next weekend, May 2, 3 and 4. Granted, the event is more about white water river activities, but I for one am as much looking forward to the evening activities at the Gas Light Bar as I am the ones on the water.

For full disclosure, I brew and drink with Tony, one of the event organizers. Don’t let that fact keep you away.

Green Mill to stop brewing at Grand Ave location?

In part, edbeered posted this over at BeerAdvocate today:

…I went to Green Mill Brewing today and was informed by the bartender that they are no longer brewing at that location. He stated that they were looking to start a brewery that would serve all the Green Mill restaurants. He went on to say that they were going to expand the bar where the brew kettles are now, and all I could think was “what a waste”…

Anyone have more info to share, please do.

Pig Happenings

Mark over at The Muddy Pig sent out the following email yesterday.

Hi All, lots going on at The Muddy Pig.

Equinox Beer Sale. Some beers are just better in 750ml bottles than in smaller bottles or even on tap. In fact we love them so much that we keep buying them even though we don’t have room for them all.  We need to clear some out to make room for the new beers so we’re having a sale.  Join us this Thursday, March 20 to celebrate the vernal equinox with big bottles of beer at fire sale prices.  Quantities are limited and when they’re gone, they’re gone.

Flat Earth Turns 1. Join us next Monday, March 24 to celebrate Flat Earth Brewing’s first birthday.  We’ll have 4 Flat Earth beers on tap along with a couple of surprises and Jeff Williamson (Mr. Flat Earth himself) will be on hand to talk beer. The party starts at 5:00. Oh, and all Flat Earth beers will be just $3.

Bell‘s Oberon Release Party.  You know it’s spring when Oberon arrives. The Muddy Pig will be hosting the St. Paul release party for Oberon on Tuesday, March 25 starting at 6:00.  Enjoy pints of Oberon for just $3.  We’ll also be raffling off Bell’s goodies from 6-8 so plan on not getting much done at work next week.
I think that’s enough for now. Mark

Edible Twin Cities Beer Primer

A friend who knows my love of beer handed me the most recent edition of Edible Twin Cities with the caveat, “You probably know most of the stuff in this article, but it’s still pretty interesting.” Indeed, I did, and indeed it was. The article gives an overview of the beer scene in Minnesota, brewing 101 and other resources to check out. While the full article isn’t on-line, they site does feature a web-only preview.

Pick up the issue on news stands at co-ops, natural food stores, and other fine food establishments.

Rum River Wort Hogs in Strib

Nice story in the Strib yesterday highlighting the homebrew club in the North Metro…..

A club of home-brewers share full flavors and friendship at their montly meetings in Anoka

The raspberry chocolate port wine being tasted so captivated Cheryl Kern that she turned to the maker and blurted: “Can I lick the bottle?” ¶ The port wine was one of 13 beers, three wines and three meads (wines made with honey) sampled last Monday night — all in small portions — by a merry band of home-brewers known as the Rum River Wort Hogs, who come together to share tips, techniques and tastes once a month at Billy’s Bar & Grill in Anoka.

The group, in its 13th year, welcomes home-brewers of all skill levels. Some brew with home kits, others from scratch. Beyond beer, Wort Hogs make wines, meads and ciders. As for the group’s name, “wort” refers to the liquid that becomes beer once fermented, longtime member Owen Strand of Anoka explained.
