Ryan Anderson (that's me!) is the editor & founder of MNBeer. Much has changed since the fall of 2005 and I'm proud to have been a part of it all. Sometime I'll tell you about my grand theory that links craft brewing to punk rock. Just ask.

Schell’s Tasting at Heritage

Head over to Heritage today and taste Schell’s Stag Series No. 3, Rauchbier.

It might not feel like it today, but warmer days are close and soon we’ll be cranking up that grill. Nothing goes better with grilled meat and warm days than the smoky flavor of a Rauchbier. This traditional German style smoked brew has a lighter body and color and pairs well with almost anything that comes off your grill. We liked it so much we decided to make it this weeks’ tasting. We’ll also be pouring samples of their current seasonal, Bock, and a few other brews from this local favorite brewery. Our Thursday
tastings run from 5-7PM.

Summit’s Position in Pints at the Brewery, Clarified

Summit clarified Mark Stutrud’s position on selling pints on premise at breweries in Minnesota. The Strib piece we mentioned earlier (here, in fact) say on their Facebook page this afternoon:

We fully support the idea of selling pints on premise at breweries. In fact, Summit Pres Mark Stutrud & Ted Marti of Schell’s have been quietly building alliances to promote this legislation for several years. As we continue to work to be able to sell beer at our breweries, we still support the 3-tier system. Our hope is to work together w/ all pertinent parties to open up new opportunities for breweries in MN.

Thursday Tasting at Heritage: Mad River

Thursday, 5-7 at Heritage.

The roots of Mad River Brewing go back to the early days of the craft beer movement. Excursions to buy homebrewing supplies led Brewmaster Bob Smith to Ken Grossman’s Homebrew Shop in Chico, California. After Ken shared his plans to build a brewery in Chico to be called Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Bob became determined to found a similar brewery in Humboldt County. In the spring of 1989 Sierra Nevada, having outgrown its starting brewery and with a new larger plant under construction, offered to sell their original equipment to Smith. Fast forward to 2010, which saw Mad River win Small Brewery of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival, in addition to three medals. For our tasting this Thursday the 24th we’ll be pouring a bunch of brews from Mad River, including 2 from their Artisan Reserve series, The Mad Belgian and Serious Madness. Our Thursday tastings run from 5-7PM.
