Ryan Anderson (that's me!) is the editor & founder of MNBeer. Much has changed since the fall of 2005 and I'm proud to have been a part of it all. Sometime I'll tell you about my grand theory that links craft brewing to punk rock. Just ask.

Cellar’s Roseville Beer Tasting

Mmm. Free beer…

This week’s theme: Headin’ Back Home to Minnesota (and Wisconsin). Friday, November 17th. Well Colorado has locked up a birth in the finals, and now the question is, will it be MN/WI representing the other half for the U.S., or will new #2 Northwest carry into the finals? This week we will sample some of the best Minnesota and Wisconsin have to offer, and finish up our tour of the states. After this week we will do a Christmas beer tasting before heading off to do the countries. As of right now Colorado has a good lead followed by NW, then Michigan, and the NE and California are heading up the rear. So come on in and try some free beer, because drinking in a crowd is so much more fun!

The Cellars Wines, Brews & Spirits FREE – IN STORE Beer Tastings begin at 7 p.m. and no reservations or fees are required. Please call or email me with any suggestions, questions or special requests.

Thank you,

Joe Haugen

Three Minnesota Listings on Beer Advocate’s Top 100 American Beers

I haven’t bothered to look at the rankings for a while, but I’m happy to report that Surly Bender and Furious (#76 & 92 respectively) have joined the ranks behind Town Hall’s beloved Masala Mama IPA (#7).

And speaking of Surly… just a reminder that there is a tour today at noon. You can also get your hands on growlers today. I’m tempted to go today, despite the fact that I’m currently job hunting and trying to maintain a budget. A growler of Darkness sounds quite tempting, and free tastings & tours are always a good time.

Anyway, regardless of whether or not I go, if you haven’t visited Surly, I recommend you do so today.

Let’s Talk About Recent Beer History…

We’ve never claimed to be all-knowing with regards to beer in Minnesota. In fact, rumor has it that we’ve even made a mistake or two on occasion. In any case, now that MNBeer is well over a year old, we thought it would be fun to look back into some of our resources and ask you, dear readers, to tell us a little more about a number of breweries/brewpubs that are listed on some of the infrequently-updated beer resource websites. Ideally it would be nice to do this in our new, lonely forum, but even the comment area would work. So… tell us what you know or remember about these places:

Ambleside Brewing Company, Kasota Avenue, SE Minneapolis

Black River Brewery & Pub, Elk River

Black Moon Brewing, St. Paul

Black Widow Brewing, St. Paul

Boundary Waters Brewing, Isabella (planned?)

Bowery Pub and Brewery, Minneapolis (w/ Herkimer’s address…)

Brew Station Brewery, Shakopee

Chang O’Hara’s, St. Paul (listed as a brewpub on some sites)

Clubhaus Brewpub, Rochester

Dave’s Brewfarm

District Warehouse Brewing, Minneapolis

Glacial Lakes Brewing Co., New York Mills/Perham

Harwell’s Steakhouse and Brewery, Shakopee

Northern Plains Brewing Co., St. Paul

Patrick McGoverns (listed as a brewpub?)

Shannon Kelley’s Brewpub, St. Paul

Trader & Trapper, Moorhead

Wolf’s Brewery, Stillwater

And the list goes on. It seems as if there are always a couple of breweries listed in Great Lakes Brewing News that are nothing more than a concept and/or a business plan. And of course let’s not forget some more recent losses such as Union Station, Bandana, Watertower, Hops and Sherlock’s, among others.

Shed some light on these places friends. It’s Friday, you’re working… or hardly working… here’s a new distraction for you…
