Friday Tastings: Thomas Liquors, Ale Jail

It’s Friday and that means…free beer!  Fave St. Paul beer haunts the Ale Jail and Thomas Liquors are hosting tastings this afternoon at 4pm.

Thomas welcomes new Goose Island rep. Jon Landers (aka John Bierman) to the store to pour some G.I. on the bar today. Belgian styles galore!

Afterward, head on over to the Ale Jail and meet Arnello Mollica, owner of Central Waters Brewing Co, and taste his many delicious beers including the last of the wonderful double IPA, Illumination.

Brooklyn Tasting/Signing at Heritage Monday

Look left, look right…  yeah. Right there. See the Event list. Yeah. In any case, we’ve mentioned that this week marks the rollout of Brooklyn in our market before. Follow the link and if it’s your style (as it seems to be for some folks) hop on the Brooklyn train. There’s many-a-stops and Frank wanted us to remind us that you shouldn’t miss a visit with Steve Hindy from Brooklyn at Heritage on Monday. Read on… or just show up… 7pm at Heritage.

Before starting up Brooklyn Brewery, President and Co-founder Steve Hindy was a journalist, serving as a Beirut based Middle East Correspondent for the Associated Press. While back in the states watching the Mets 1986 championship season unfold and brewing his own beer, he convinced his downstairs neighbor Tom Potter that they should quit their jobs and start a brewery. No one has done more to promote beer and its food pairing possibilities and that passion keeps Brooklyn on the leading edge of the craft beer revolution. Today, they are a top 40 brewery in the US and also ship to Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Hong Kong, Japan and Great Britain.

We’re excited to welcome Brooklyn Brewery to Minnesota and have the one and only Steve Hindy himself in store on Monday April 4th at 7PM. We’ll have samples of all the brews they are bringing into the state, including their IPA, Brown Ale, Lager, Summer Ale, Pennant Ale and Local 1 & 2. Steve will also be signing copies of his book, Beer School, about his experiences starting a brewery from scratch, and the first 20 people who can read will receive a free autographed copy.

Here ye, hear ye! Senate Hearing on Wednesday!!

PLEASE NOTE: The hearing has been re-scheduled to Wednesday, April 6th at 5:30 pm in room 123 of the Capitol. Also the bill allowing liquor stores to sell merchandise has been added to the agenda.

Do you live in the district of a Senator who sits on the Senate Commerce Committee? Then your voice is needed! Surly is asking folks to call in and voice support for the bill that would allow them (and other breweries) to sell pints. Also on the committee’s agenda is the legislation allowing brew pubs to expand their distribution.

From the Surly Facebook page:

Surly Needs YOU! On Tuesday, April 5,Wednesday April 6 the bill to allow Surly to sell pints of our own beer at our proposed Destination Brewery, will be heard by the Senate Commerce Committee. The bill needs to pass this committee to keep moving.

We need our supporters who live in the districts of the Senate Commerce Committee members to contact them. Let them know you support SF 416 and ask them to support the bill at the April 5th hearing.

We need these 15 members to know their constituents support Surly, Minnesota craft beer, jobs and small business, so please call or email them before next Tuesday.

Belg-a-Rama on NOW!

No joke: Belg-a-Rama #5 at the Blue Nile is ON now!

What else do you really need to know? Oh yeah, the beers:

-De Ranke Noir de Dottingies, strong dark ale
-Van den Bossche Buffalo Belgian Bitter (very new!)
-The great Tripel Karmeliet from Bosteels, one of Al’s all-time favorites
-Abbaye des Rocs Grand Cru
-Two collaborative brews, Deux Brasseurs Ale, brewed by De Proef in Belgium, with Jason Perkins of Maine Allagash Brewery, and
-Ommegang’s strong Belgian, using yeast from Brasserie La Chouffee. (Al notes that this is the first exception to their “brewed in Belgium only” rule, but it is with good cause. Only a handful made it in the state, and it’s from a favorite Belgian-style American brewery, so he thought you’d excuse the exception. We do.)

This one will run Friday, April 1, through Sunday, April 9. If any of these runs out, the replacements will be two great sours from Brouwerij Bockor, Bellegems Bruin, or Cuvee des Jacobins Rouge. That’s right.
