Name That Beer… Really… (Town Hall)

I guess if you’re busy making good beer, coming up with a snappy name doesn’t always work. We’ll forgive Mike for the moment, seeing as how my suggestion of “Strong Pale II, Electric Boogaloo” (reference), is obviously going to win. Anyway, Minneapolis Town Hall is releasing a Strong Pale Ale on Monday. I had it at Arborfest and enjoyed the hell out of it. I think you will too.

Hey All,
Monday we will release another beer for you. This is a Strong Pale Ale. It is made using British base malt, American yeast, and featuring the Summit hop variety. It is a bold and flavorful beer that wants a name…that’s up to you. Send me your best beer name and when you come down to the release Monday you will see the award winning name. If it is your creative title, I’ll buy you a growler. How’s that sound?

Email me your best….release @5pm
Cheers,
Mike

Surly Bitter Brewer Release Tonight & More…

You can get a taste (or three) of Surly’s newest beer, a heavily Americanized English Bitter, aptly titled Bitter Brewer (I suppose Yorktown would have been too obscure and not very surly...) I was secretly hoping they’d call it Powermad… oh well… Uptown Old Chicago, tonight, 7-9pm.

Time for your latest shot of Surly news.

First off, our new beer, Bitter Brewer, debuts at the Uptown Old Chicago on
Wednesday, May 9th. Dollar off regular taps from 7-9 PM. The new beer is our
take on an English Bitter. Yes, we put more hops in it than we’re supposed
to. Look for this beer around town for a week or so. We only brewed one
batch, so it will be gone faster than a Bud Light lovin’ frat boy at one of
our tours.

Also coming up this week, a beer dinner at North Coast Restaurant in
Wayzata. The event is Friday, May 11th. Dinner starts at 7:00 and the price
of $39 is a bargain for the 5 course meal.  Check out our calendar for the
menu. Call 952.475.4960 or check out their web-site for more info,
www.northcoastwayzata.com. This will be your first chance to taste this
year’s release of CynicAle! We are shooting for a launch date around
Memorial Day since Surly Nation demanded its return.

We have gotten a few kudos lately and wanted you all to know. Furious won
the Best In Show at Arborfest beer festival last weekend. Thanks to all that
voted for Surly!
We also got props from the City Pages, Best of the Twin Cities – they gave
us a “Best Take-Home Brew” award. Of course, we like our beer at our home,
we like our beer at The Gnome; we like our beer on a boat, we like our beer
with a goat. We like our beer here and there, we like our beer everywhere.
Thanks guys. And finally, our own bitter brewer, Todd Haug, got a nice write
up in BeerAdvocate magazine. Pick up a copy at a local beer bar. Even
better, subscribe.

MORE BEER! You will find Surly popping up at more restaurants, bars and
liquor stores as our new tanks are up and running. You gotta like that.

See you drinking,
Omar

Barley John’s Maibock Release

It’s May and Barley John’s is rolling out the Maibock…

We will be celebrating the first day of May with the release of our annual Maibock. This Tuesday enjoy $2 glasses of Maibock from 4-8pm. The kitchen will also be conjuring up some German menu fare to go along with the release. Our outdoor patio is now open, so come on up and enjoy a glass of Maibock this Tuesday! (**note: there will be no cask this week due to the Maibock release party)

Maibock (8%abv): This traditional German lager is brewed back in Febuary to give it an appropriate amount of time to age – it is one of 3 lagers that we do every year because of the aging time. We brewed this beer in the traditional double decoction brewing style that releases a multitude of malty flavors characteristic of the style. A fiery orangish hue from the use of German Munich malt and hopped with German Hallertau. We cold lagered this beer for 4 months to allow the flavors to come together, it was well worth the wait!

Finnegan’s Summerfest

On June 9, 2007, the Finnegan’s Community Fund and the Minneapolis Jaycees are hosting the first annual FINNEGAN’S SUMMERFEST from 1:00pm to 2:00am at The Cabooze and surrounding area on Cedar Avenue . The proceeds from this amazing music event and block party will benefit Heading Home Hennepin, an ambitious initiative to end homelessness in Minneapolis and Hennepin County within 10 years.

You simply can’t afford to miss this amazing lineup of local talent, all brought together for a common cause. This all-day block party, lasting from 1:00pm to 2:00am at the Cabooze and surrounding area on Cedar Avenue in Minneapolis, features an incredible collection of local artists on outdoor and indoor stages including Dave Pirner and the Volunteers, Mark Mallman, Tim Mahoney, The Alarmists, The Delilahs (reunion), White Light Riot, Vicious Vicious, The Melismatics, Epic Hero, Charlie Parr, The Brothers Frantzich, Joanna James, Billy Johnson, Kevin Bowe, Jeff Arundel, and others.
