Steel Toe Lunker Release Friday (4/13)

Steel Toe Brewing is set to release their Barleywine, Lunker tomorrow at 5:30 at the brewery. Lunker is a 14.4% English Barleywine aged in Templeton Rye Whiskey barrels. As the story goes, the whiskey produced in Templeton, IA was said to be Al Capone’s favorite spirit. You can read more about the distillery and the rye produced in Templeton over at Heavy Table.

Lunker was aged in Templeton barrels for 5+ months. If you had a chance to try this during The Beer Dabbler Showcase at the Winter Carnival, you’ll find this to be a different beer, thanks to time and barrel aging. And at 14+%, this is a beer you can age should you choose to do so.

Four bottle limit, $20/bottle (tax included). Cash or credit card.

No tours or Lunker samples Friday. Enjoy!

Muddy Pig’s 1000th Beer: Summit 103

Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 19th from 12-3. The Muddy Pig will tap their 1000th beer that day. What will it be, you ask? A special beer from Summit Brewing Co., 103, brewed especially for the occasion. Details for the beer are still in the works, but we know that it’ll include 10 malts and 10 hops. It’ll only be available at the Muddy Pig, and only ’til it runs out. One can only guess that it will be brewed on Summit’s new pilot brewery.

Congrats to the The Muddy Pig on serving 1000 different beers over the course of their 10 years. Cheers!

From large-scale breweries such as Cold Spring and trendsetters like St. Paul’s Flat Earth Brewing Company, to individual brewpubs like Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery and Fitger’s Brewhouse, Shepard provides commentary for more than thirty beer makers and three-hundred Minnesota beers. Accessible enough for people at all stages in their journeys to discover great-tasting beer, the information-packed guidebook also features a list of helpful books and websites, as well as information on Minnesota’s beer tastings and festivals.

For each brewery and brewpub site you’ll find:

•    a description and brief history, plus many “don’t miss” features
•    a description of beers on tap and a list of seasonal and specialty beers
•    a space for the brewmaster’s autograph
•    notes on the pub food, with recommendations
•    suggestions of nearby sights and activities
•    general directions to the location
•    Shepard’s personal ratings of the experience, plus room to add your own.

“Thorough, interesting, and surely helpful to those—there are thousands these days—who are searching for a decent glass of beer.” —Jerry Apps, author of Breweries of Wisconsin

Robin Shepard is author of Wisconsin’s Best Breweries and Brewpubs, which was awarded the Quill and Tankard Writing Award of the North American Guild of Beer Writers, and Best Breweries and Brewpubs of Illinois.

The Minnesota Craft Brewer’s Guild is excited and proud to bring the newest of its craft beer festivals to Duluth! The first annual All Pints North Summer Brew Fest will celebrate beer brewed in Minnesota by breweries and brew pubs in the Minnesota Craft Brewer’s Guild, plus a few select regional and national craft brands. Join us by the lake to meet the brewers and enjoy unlimited amazing Minnesota+ craft beer samples, hip food vendors, beer-centered activities and educational components, live music and entertainment, and much more!

The Minnesota Craft Brewer’s Guild is a not-for-profit organization that was founded in 2000 to promote Minnesota breweries, create an open line of communication between brewers, and be an advocate for progressive beer laws in Minnesota. The Guild promotes Minnesota’s burgeoning brewing industry by sponsoring festivals and special events, including Autumn Brew Review and Winterfest, that showcase the talent of Minnesota’s craft brewers. These long-standing, professional and fun festivals typically sell out quickly, so the Guild is thrilled to bring the same energy and patron enthusiasm to Duluth with the new All Pints North Summer Brew Fest.

If you are planning on traveling to Duluth for the event, be sure to make lodging arrangements early, as rooms tend to fill up during the summer months in Duluth. There is some info on lodging on the festival website, including potential camping options.
