This Monday 3/16/09 is Barley John’s 9th Anniversary. We will be releasing our annual Anniversary Ale – come out and help us celebrate 9 great years of brewing and restauranteering!

We will also have our St. Patrick’s Day menu available:
Corned Beef & Cabbage Boil | Lamb Stew | Periwinkle Pasta (Irish Sea Snail)

Happy Hour Pricing on all of our Pub Brewed Beers & Seasonals (excluding barrel aged)
We will be tapping our Anniversary Ale – Just $3.25 – All Day!

Thank You for your continued support these last 9 years!

Anniversary Ale (6.5%abv) – We brew this Strong Irish Red Ale to celebrate both our Anniversary and the closely aligned St. Patrick’s Day holiday. Hopped with English Fuggle hops and fermented with an British Isle strain, this strong red enjoys a caramel & bready finish from the use of flaked barley and crystal malts in the mash.

Double Oat Stout (4.9%) – This oatmeal stout is brewed with two types of oats to give a smooth start with a classic roast profile of a stout. Brewed with UK Fuggle hops and fermented with our house strain.

Muddy Pig News – New Beer Engine and events

Two beer events (and a Scotch one) from Mark at the Pig:

Wednesday, March 18. Opening of the Muddy Pig Firkin Fest. We will be tapping a firkin of Bell’s Porter at 5:00. This is the official introduction of our new beer engine, so stop in and enjoy a pint of hangover cure.

Monday, March 30. BenRaich Scotch whiskey tasting – $20. The latest in our ongoing series of spirit tastings with Allistair Walker of BenRaich who will discuss the history of the distillery and provide samples of 7 of their wonderful whiskeys. History, tasting and food for just $20 per person. Tickets available at The Pig and, as always, we suggest you purchase yours early as the event will likely sell out.

Tuesday, March 31. Unibroue beer tasting – $20. The best thing to come out of Canada since hockey is the beer of Unibroue, producer of such Pig favorites as Le Fin du Monde, Trois Pistoles and Blanche de Chambly. Mark Proell of Unibroue will be here to talk about Belgian-style beers, the history of Unibroue and sample out lots of beer. Beer, food and discussion for $20 per person. Yup, tickets now available here at The Pig and also Thomas Liquors on Grand Ave.

The Skinny on Summit Horizon Red Ale

I’m away from my email, but I suspect the following (lifted from Heavy Table) is also in my inbox. I’m looking forward to trying Summit’s latest beer, Horizon Red Ale:

“Summit Brewing Company announces a brand new year-round beer to be released this spring:  Horizon Red Ale – an emerging American hybrid ale that crosses the boundaries of styles.  This red-hued ale projects an intensity of complex hops – yet allows the drinker to experience the balance and character of the malt.  Floral, dry, hoppy and satisfying.  Beautifully dry hopped, Horizon Red Ale will be considered a classic.”

Beer nerds only, after this point:

Malts used: Two row pale, caramel, cara-red, wheat and black.

Hops used: Horizon, Amarillo, Cascades and Summit

Original Gravity: 13.3 degrees Plato

Bittering Units: 65 to 70

Alcohol by volume: 5.7%
