“Strong Beer” at the Minnesota State Fair

Woo! Yay! Rah! Now the plastic glass of overpriced Miller Lite at the Fair can jump from 3.2 to 4% (or whatever it is…)!!! Seriously, though, this could potentially open the doors for our craft brew friends who don’t make 3.2 beers. I’ve never really paid attention to the state of beer at the State Fair (other than the homebrew contest, but that’s another thing entirely), but this can’t be a bad thing:

Fair officials announced Friday they will ditch the long tradition of wimpy 3.2-percent-alcohol beer and allow vendors to sell stronger beer to thirsty fairgoers when the event opens in August.

New at the Fair: Strong beer

ESB at Barley John’s

Another tasty offering from Barley John’s… an ESB.

This Bitter’s “Extra Special” comes in the form of toasted malt – just a touch to enhance the biscuit tones in the malt. Light to moderate hop profile and a touch of sweetness to balance, this pale/orange British ESB lands right between our Bitter and IPA for an enjoyable refreshing ale.

Olde World Renaissance Fair: Interesting Beer and Wine… Geeks in Costume…

Lords and ladies… um… I’m not really the medieval type, but the Olde World Renaissance Fair sounds interesting if nothing for a cask of something special from Lake Superior and meads and wines from J Bird Winery. This Saturday and Sunday, Twig, Minnesota.

The Olde World Renaissance Fair will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 9 – 10, 2007, from 10:00 am – 7:00 pm both days. Ale Stars may be interested to know that Lake Superior Brewing is the beer sponsor of the event, and will be serving our beer and root beer there. Among our beer offerings will be our Stout, Kolsch, a “brewer’s choice” and also “Brikenhar Ale” brewed specially for the event. There will be just one cask of this, so it may sell out on Saturday. We will also be serving meads and fruit wines from the J. Bird Winery from Cambridge, MN. This is one of Minnesota’s oldest wineries. Last year, they provided a traditional mead, an “Eqyptian mead” flavored with hibiscus, and some fruit wines.

Info at www.owrenaissancefaire.com. Tickets are $9.00 per day. $1 off for advance purchase, or $1 off at the door if you’re in medieval costume. More info on their website, along with maps and directions.
Last year’s event was a lot of fun, looks like even more entertainment this year.
