I didn’t even know about this Republic place, but the website/menu/taps all look great. I hated Preston’s anyway, might have to hit this place up next chance I get.

Nice tap selection. I’ve been in a couple times now. It’s amazing that it doesn’t smell like old urine in the place anymore. Nice happy hour too and $2 cans of Hamm’s all the time.

Going to be interesting to see how things go for them. Saturday afternoons when it’s been sunny and packed on the Town Hall patio, there have been less than 10 people on Republic’s 200-person patio. They don’t allow smoking at all on the patio which could hurt them (we all hate smoking but smokers like to be able to do so when they’re outside). I know they’re in the process of getting a permit to allow them to have live music inside (small band acoustic only most likely or similar limitations).

Hmmm…not allowing smoking on the patio seems like a poor decision. Maybe if they were on Grand Ave in St. Paul or other parts of the Cities, but it seems like it would be a big disadvantage in that area.

The also don’t open until 4pm. That might be OK on weekdays but on Saturdays and Sundays? Really? By the time they open, the best sun of the day has come and gone. Also being open until 1pm rather than 2pm could hurt them too. Lots of people don’t like having to go find another bar for that last hour if they want to keep partying. Show up before they open and you’ll go find someplace else to spend the afternoon. Chances of returning once they finally open at 4pm are slim.

You show up in the area and where are you going to go? Town Hall with a full patio or the place with the empty patio? Sure theres no wait but people almost subconsciously are drawn to crowds. There must be a reason all the people are here and not there.

Seems they read my post. Looks like they’re going to start opening at 11am soon.
