Town Hall vs. Barley John’s…A Newer, Tastier Cold War?

This evening Town Hall released their Piledriver double IPA…we were there.  Last Thursday we were at Barley John’s to try out their double IPA.  Is there some kind of weird arms race going on between brewpubs or are we just lucky?  Next thing you know, we’re going to be forced to sample someone’s triple IPA.  What kind of cruel world do we live in where beer lovers are forced to visit their favorite brewpubs frequently to share in the delicious one-upmanship?  In any event, I think you’ll find both double IPA’s wonderful, so make an effort to stop in before these two great offerings run out.

    I’d blame it on luck.

Town Hall made a good Tripel IPA a while back. When I’m not drinking Minnesota beer, I’ve been known to enjoy Urthel Hop-It and Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel. I like the latter more, but that’s just me.

Since I’m drinking Minnesota, I enjoyed a Lake Superior Special Ale and a Schell’s Snowstorm while chilling on the couch. Mmm.

Speaking on MN beer and Lake Superior, I’ve been drinking the Lake Superior Old Man Winter, a barley wine. It tastes a little different than I expected, but is definately a solid representative of the style. I would also add that it’s better after warming up a little.

It’s even better after a year… or three. I have some year-old stuff that I need to taste. Good stuff.

If you haven’t had a chance to have Dark Knight at Barley John’s you better do it FAST. It was very close to gone when I was in there last Friday. The double IPA is tasty stuff.

Or it could have been this guy I know that had 3 glasses and his friend had about the same. And when he was in a couple days before that and had a couple glasses of it then and his friends did too. Or those damn MNBeer guys.
