Great Waters Beer Update

Here are the beers currently pouring at Great Waters… some great seasonals.

PUSHED SEASONALS [Served at 38F on draft]

“The Lion in Winter” An American wheat ale brewed with dandelion honey. Light bodied and crisp. Low hop profile to enhance the aroma of dandelion honey. ABV. 5.8% IBU 20 O.G. 13.5 plato

“King Boreas Imperial Wit” A strong wit ale. Lots of Curacao bitter orange peel, coriander, and a hint of star anise. Brewed with German pale wheat malt and Golden Promise barley. This is our Winter version of a Belgian white beer. Medium bodied, amber colored, and unfiltered. ABV. 6.8% IBU 30 O.G. 19.0 plato

“Vulcanus Rex” A toasty red colored ale. Medium bodied ale with just enough hops to balance the malt character. More malt flavor and hops aroma than say a Killian’s, this is an easy drinking carnival beer. ABV. 5.2% IBU 25 O.G. 12.5 plato

CASK SEASONALS [Served at 52F and hand pulled]

Queen of the Snow’s Special Bitter: Medium bodied ESB brewed with Maris Otter, caramel and bisquet malt. We used only East Kent Golding hops to give this ale a regal, vindictive character. ABV. 5.8% IBU 55 O.G. !3.6 plato

Control-Alt-Delete: Medium bodied German style ale that has been cask conditioned in the English style. Weyerman Pilsner malt, a little bit of black barley, and some crystal hops to brew this easy drinkin’ cask ale. If you think about it, German beers like this were most likely casked back in the day. Little bit of toast, little bit of spiciness from the hops and a little bit of malt flavor inside. ABV. 5.2% IBU 30 O.G. 12.5 plato

Ides of March IPA: A dark amber colored, full bodied ale with lots of caramel malt and five varieties of hops. Dry hopped at fermentations’ end with whole flower Chinooks. We used an East coast pale ale yeast to leave a little fruitiness in the backbone. A very aggressive hop flavor. ABV. 6.8% IBU 99 O.G. 16.2 plato

Twin Cities Imbiber #3 online

Twin Cities Imbiber #3Yes, the spring issue of Twin Cities Imbiber is online now. Look for it in print shortly. Features include pieces on Rush River Brewing Co., a beer history piece, a spotlight on Dennis Brothers Liquors, brewing coffee at home, Ciroc Vodka and more.

Some good local news as well… here’s a tidbit… Summit Hefe Weizen will be returning to Minnesota this summer. It makes sense – after all, we can’t let those Chicago folks

Sam Adams Hop Sharing Program

Slightly out of the realm of MNBeer, but still interesting… Samuel Adams has implemented a hop sharing program, allowing smaller brewers access to 20,000 pounds of hops – 10,000 pounds of East Kent Golding and 10,000 pounds of Tettnang. They’ll be selling hops from the 2007 harvest at their cost, allowing brewers to buy up to 528 pounds. Though it won’t solve peoples’ problems entirely, it certainly sounds like a nice gesture. Thanks to TH for the heads up.

Barley John’s: brewery news & Valentine’s Day

barleyjohns.jpgHere’s some news from Barley John’s. Their Valentine’s Day dinner sounds tasty and I can attest to the fact that the Rosie’s Old Ale with raspberries is really tasty. I think I might even like it better than the “standard” Rosie’s.

Brewery Update
As some of you have noticed we are out of the Stockyard IPA – we apologize for this. Our brewery has been out of commission for the last 2 weeks as we work to fix a few mechanical issues that have sprung up. We should resume brewing again hopefully this weekend and will restore our regular beers back to tap within the next few weeks. We added another seasonal and have some fun guest kegs lined up in the interim. Thanks again and we apologize for the inconvenience – we are getting thirsty too!

Winterfest: MCBG response

Here’s a nice response from the Minnesota Craft Brewer’s Guild regarding Winterfest. They’re a stand-up, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Minnesota’s great local beer. I sincerely hope that your experience at the event won’t turn you off of their other great events.

Dear Winterfest 2008 Patrons,

We wanted to send our apologies to those of you that were in the line outside of Landmark Center in the cold on Friday night waiting to get entrance into Winterfest. We increased the amount of attendees this year and our old ticketing method along with adding identifying wrist bands did not work for the new sized crowd. As soon as the event planners were informed of the slow-moving line we quickly added 5 additional staff members to help the group move along more quickly. We then announced and added an extra half hour onto the tail end of the festival (ending at 10:30 p.m.) to make up for the time at the front where you were not enjoying the delicious Minnesota craft beer! Please accept our sincerest apologies and we will be working out a much better system for our future brewing events.

We hope you enjoyed the festival despite the line-up snag. All sixteen MN Craft Brewer’s Guild brewery members were present and enjoyed sharing their Winter brews with each of you – many of which were only available to this festival! Congratulations to the Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery and brewer’s Mike Hoops, Josh Bischoff, and Adam Theis for winning the great Snowshoe award for their delicious Chocolate Raspberry Bourbon Stout! Winterfest along with Autumn Brew Review are fundraisers for the MN Craft Brewer’s Guild whose non-profit work promotes local, craft brewing in the state. We thank you for your patronage and understanding and hope to see you at our next event!

Save The Dates:

Autumn Brew Review 2008– September 27

Winterfest 2009 – January 23

Our apologies again, please forward this on to your friends and family that attended with you and thank you for your continued support!
