Belgian Special Bitter

Here’s a new one at Barley John’s, a Belgian Special Bitter:

Spiced with corriander and fresh orange peel, this golden ale enjoys a beautiful clarity with a thick foamy “Belgian Lace” head. We added a pale ale’s worth of East Kent Goldings hops into this one for a crisp and bitter finish.Optionally served with an orange slice.

New Beers at Great Waters, Granite City

Great Waters has a new IPA, Holy Hand Grenade, on cask:

Lots of Vienna malt and hops were used in this cask. Five different malt varieties and four type of hops used to creat this tribute to Monty Pythons’ “Holy Grail”. Served on cask just like the did back in good old Camelot.

Bob from Granite City told me that they’d be tapping their O’Stara’s Spring Ale on Wednesday:

We will be tapping our O’Stara’s spring ale on May 16th this week. It is a lightly bodied ale with light bitterness and a refreshing dry hop flavor. Definitely not an extreme beer by any stretch of the imagination just a plain old quaffable summer pint.

It will be available at all our Minnesota stores, so if you live near
Roseville, Eagan, St. Louis Park, Maple Grove, St. Cloud or Moorhead (well Fargo really) head on over to your local Granite City for summer refreshment.

O’Hara’s Has Closed

Man, this sucks… O’Hara’s was the first brewpub I spent any real time at, back in the late 1990s while I was attending SCSU. I’ve always thought they had solid, tasty beer. According to Chris (Laumb), their barrelage went up every year, but the brewpub biz relies on the restaurant side of the operation, and I guess the competition is tough in St. Cloud.

Here’s a link to the article from St. Cloud Times:

I hope the best for Chris Laumb (the brewer) and everyone else that worked at O’Hara’s. Sorry to see another one go.

Name That Beer… Really… (Town Hall)

I guess if you’re busy making good beer, coming up with a snappy name doesn’t always work. We’ll forgive Mike for the moment, seeing as how my suggestion of “Strong Pale II, Electric Boogaloo” (reference), is obviously going to win. Anyway, Minneapolis Town Hall is releasing a Strong Pale Ale on Monday. I had it at Arborfest and enjoyed the hell out of it. I think you will too.

Hey All,
Monday we will release another beer for you. This is a Strong Pale Ale. It is made using British base malt, American yeast, and featuring the Summit hop variety. It is a bold and flavorful beer that wants a name…that’s up to you. Send me your best beer name and when you come down to the release Monday you will see the award winning name. If it is your creative title, I’ll buy you a growler. How’s that sound?

Email me your best….release @5pm
Cheers,
Mike
