Minnesota Monthly: The Best in Summer Brews

I saw this in the April issue of Minnesota Monthly and thought I’d share. It’s always good to see the Minnesota breweries and brewpubs get some press. Though I don’t agree with all of their beer choices (i.e. I would have listed Summit Scandia rather then their hefe), there is definitely some good information. Unfortunately, three things stand out in the article that just don’t work for me:

1. Where is Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery? Every other brewpub in the Twin Cities was mentioned and strangely enough, one of the most well-regarded brewpubs in the city gets no mention.

2. Though they’re brand-spankin’ new, it would have been nice to see St. Paul’s Flat Earth Brewing included.

3. Amstel light sticks out like a sore thumb. All of the other beers/breweries/brewpubs that are mentioned are located in Minnesota – and are in alphabetical order. …and then Amstel Light shows up. 🙂 Not surprisingly, they have a full-page ad within the same section.

Did you notice what it says right below the main headline (I’m looking at it online)?

    SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION

    Perhaps this explains the choices.

I’ve never really noticed the advertisements creeping into the articles, but it does make sense, of course. Amstel Light still sticks out like a sore thumb, though. I’d guess that Town Hall was accidentally overlooked in this piece. And of course Flat Earth is so new that the author may not have even heard of them by the time the deadline came around.

Hah! It looks like they lifted the content from Mn Beer! Sure you guys didn’t write it?

‘special ad. section’ are essentially press releases rewritten under the guise of journalism, so if said beers/brew pubs aren’t listed, it’s likely they didn’t pay to be included in the piece. a writer’s research (or lack thereof) hae nothing to do with the content, sadly.
