The Herkimer was one of the first bars I visited upon moving to Minneapolis. Looking for a place to watch the Packer game on a brisk Sunday, I had heard good things about the crowd and the food, but was up in the air on the beer.

Republic in Uptown hosts the launch of the Twin Cities newest brewery, Bad Weather Brewing Co. on Thursday, March 21 from 4-7p.m. Check out their beer at $3 a pop from 4-6 pm. The launch will feature Windvane a “Minnesota red ale” and Ominous a “Midwest warmer.” They’ll also have casks of each.
Bad Weather Brewing Company is taking its creative cues from the changing Minnesota seasons. The first two beers in production include a year-round flagship, WINDVANE, which is a malt-sturdy and highly hopped Minnesota red ale, and OMINOUS, a limited-time dark storm of a beer with large, intense flavors. Three additional ales are planned to complete the 2013 seasonal rotation, each boasting distinctive and unexpected flavor profiles.
“I believe that Minnesota is one of the most exciting places to be a beer lover right now,” says Bad Weather’s co-founder Zac Carpenter. “Not because we currently have the best beers or the most beers, but because we get to witness the birth of a great beer culture that will someday very soon rival those in Portland and Denver. It is an honor to be part of that growth and Bad Weather Brewing Company is ready to become a pillar in this market.”
With a name like Mary Ann, this beer needs a song. See below. Next Tuesday, Minneapolis’ 612 Brew releases Mary Ann, a ginger lager at Edina Grill starting at 6pm. Edina Grill will have menu items that feature Mary Ann and 612 Brew’s SIX and Main Stage Amber will also be available for your imbibing pleasure.
The following day, 612Brew will release Mary Ann in the taproom on draft and make it available for growler sales. The beer will be at other accounts in the coming weeks.
Mary Ann is 612Brew’s spring/summer seasonal offering. The beer is the brewery’s first lager, brewed with Pilsen and wheat malts, Noble hops and over 70 pounds of ginger. Wait. What? You read that right. Seventy pounds of fresh, hand-grated ginger is added directly into the boil. This beer isn’t infused with ginger – it’s brewed with it for an all-out flavor and aroma assault. Think ginger ale meets beer. This light lager is low alcohol at 4.1% ABV and amazingly refreshing.
This Saturday, March 23, all of the taps at The Blue Nile turn over to big beers, Imperial Stouts, Barleywines, double IPAs and anything over 8% alcohol from American craft brewers, such as Stone, Surly, Odell, New Belgium, Indeed, Deschutes and more! Drunk up, buttercup.
