Brewing TV #37: Happiness is a Warm Carboy

New episode from our buddies at Brewing TV. We’re heading back to Chip’s homebrewery for a brew session and warm fermentation experiment. He’s joined by fellow homebrewer Don Osborn for some discussion and tasting notes. Then Jake & Mike sit down with the kellerbier version of the double decocotion dunkel from a few episodes back. And a Sing-along? Awwhh yeah.

Summit 25th Anniversary Beer

Summit Silver AnniversarySummit celebrates 25 years of beer this year. Many of us have fond memories of our first Summit… For me, that was likely sometime around ’94 when I cracked open a 6-pack box of Extra Pale Ale and enjoyed what had to be one of the hoppiest beers I’d ever tasted. (Of course in college and younger Busch & Budweiser were a bit more readily available.)

In any case, what better way to celebrate 25 years with a special release? Summit’s Silver Anniversary beer is an assertively hopped version of their flagship EPA. The beer will be brewed with 2 row and crystal malts, American ale yeast and Citra, Centennial and Cascade hops and weighs in at 6.5% abv and 80 IBUs. I’m looking forward to trying this… and forward to another 25 years of Summit. Congrats guys!

Release dates to come. As always, watch this space!

Surly 5 Labeling

Surly 5 Label

Surly 5 Label

Looking like Surly 5 will be released “whens its done”, sometime Summer-ish. I personally am quiet excited about this one.

Label copy: “In the Surly brewhouse brewing our Anniversary beers mean one thing, forget what ya know and try something different. In honor of FIVE glorious years we bring you a 100% Brettanomyces fermented Dark Ale aged in red wine barrels. Flavors of sour cherry, tobacco, oak and classic “Brett” barnyard funk balanced by Dark Munich malt chewiness. Enjoy immediately or age at cellar temperature for a couple years.

Five years! We figured five years is a decent milestone, so we would brew a sour beer for this anniversary beer. The idea behind our anniversary line-up of beers was to give Head Brewer, Todd Haug, free reign to use whatever ingredients and methods to brew this beer. this year’s bottle artwork is also a one-of-a-kinf illustration collaboration between Todd and local artists, Aesthetic Apparatus.”

Additionally they’ll have another  10 beers on tap including Chardonnay aged Modern Monk Dubbel, Wine barrel aged Trippel and the Taconite Mild.
