Winterfest teaser no. 2: McCann’s line-up

McCann’sHere’s the line-up for McCann’s Food and Brew in St. Cloud. Dawn and I stopped by McCann’s the other weekend with old friends and tasted a few beers. The icy-cold weather kept us from really settling in for a full-blown tasting, but I will say that the growler of Prairie Porter that came home with us is excellent. Chris may also have something special to bring along… who knows?

Prairie Porter (OG 1.062)
The first in our Dark Seasonal line up. Brewed with four English malts and two English hop varieties giving this beer a dark, rich, roasty background with light smoky undertones. Bittersweet chocolate flavor develops in the finish. A very nice ale for the winter time to enjoy with friends.

Deep Seven I.P.A. (OG 1.063)
One for the lovers of hoppy craft brews. Seven deep layers of flavor consisting of three English malts and four hop varieties (2 U.S./2 English). Generous portions of hops are added to the brew kettle and to the fermentation tank in a process called dry hopping. Nice English biscuit malt background supporting the contribution of the hops.

Trippel Trouble (OG 1.083)
Abbey style Trippel brewed with all Belgian malts and candi sugar. A Belgian monastery ale yeast gives this beer a fruity/spicy complexity while maintaining drinkability despite it’s strength. A wonderful beer for cold winter evenings.

Mpls St. Paul’s 40 Hot Spots…

The February issue of Mpls. St. Paul picks The Happy Gnome as one of its 40 hot spots in the Twin Cities. Fess up, which one of you looks like James Cromwell?

A man – the spitting image of James Cromwell – is sitting at the bar, and he’s spitting mad. “You’re out of it already?” he asks in disbelief, pointing to a sign advertising Brooklyn Center-brewed Surly Darkness…

Also, The Groveland Tap and The Happy Gnome get the nod in an short piece, “Where to Eat and Watch the Super Bowl.”
