Good for DT St. Paul. I just wish they were more supportive of local craft breweries. Maybe they have changed their ways – anyone know if they’re offering Surly and Flat Earth, or are they still being weird about this?

  2. Kris says:

We were at the original Bulldog Sunday and there wasn’t any Surly or Flat Earth on, although they do have Bell’s.

I like the Bulldog a lot, though that’s my one real complaint – not enough representation of local brews.

I’ve been to the Bulldog N.E. a few times, probably a year ago. I had good experiences there, but it dawned on me that they did not carry any “local” beer other than Summit. I think I heard somewhere that it’s political — i.e. some loyalty to Summit. Not the first time that’s happened…

At the end of the day, I suppose, it’s their business and they can serve whatever they please. But I can think of lots of other places in town to find the Belgians served at the Bulldog, PLUS Flat Earth and Surly. Places that are proud to carry beers from those breweries. Therefore, I will choose to spend money at those establishments and drive right on past the Bulldog.

One of the managers saw me there (Lyndale) with my Surly hat on, and he asked me how they could get cans, because people have been asking for Surly.I said he’d have to put it on tap first, and he referred to a relationship they have with Rush River. Not sure why you can’t tap ’em both, but there you go…

  6. Cathie says:

One of the guys who owns Rush River is a former bartender at Bulldog Uptown so there is the loyalty connection to RR. I like RR but it would be nice to see more local breweries on tap at all Bulldogs. I mean, come on, people. Drink AND serve local beer!

  7. Steve says:

Summit is the best local beer any, so no loss there.

  8. ryan says:

I’ve heard about the Rush River connection. It’s a shame. RR makes some very good beer, but I’d love to see more local stuff on tap than just RR and Summit EPA.

  9. Jono says:

Summit makes good beer. But so what? Let me know when they make a saison, a Belgian, or an imperial stout. Or a lineup of beers that don’t all taste pretty much the same.

  10. Steve says:

Let me know when Surly learns how to make a RIS that isn’t flabby and cloyingly sweet.

    I’ve had better home-brewed RIS.

  11. Steve says:

And while Cynic is the only Surly beer I like, I’d rather have a Hennepin, Foret or DuPont. Or Jolly Pumpkin Bam. Not to mention anything by Blaugies.

Does anyone know WHEN the St. Paul/Lowertown Bulldog will actually open? Thanks.

Hey guys, its so awesome to see so much discussion about the new Lowertown Bulldog. Here’s your official update: We are working hard on the build out of the new space, but there’s still a lot to do. I’ve been working on hiring the front of the house staff, and promise to emphasize speed and service. Everyone will be happy to know that while the Bulldog beer concept is more about world wide beers, because we will have 40 taps at the new location we will be carrying Surly! We appreciate all the constructive criticism and will be sure to take the comments and do what we can. Ps. opening date is tentatively last week of sept-first week of oct.

    Hey
I’ve been trying to get information about hiring for the new Bulldog in St. Paul. So far, the other two locations have not been too helpful except to give me a phone number that has not been answered when I try to call. Any idea if there are positions open still and if so, who I can contact about them?

Anyone hear any update on when this will open? I live across the street (literally) and am excited to have a decent bar near me that offers more than frozen pizza on the menu. The signage is up and the decals are on the windows. This just adds to my excitement. I see that Olive said that it was last week of September to first week of October and wondering if the first week of October will still be holidng up.

  16. Olive says:

    Hi,
Sorry. I was really hoping we would have been open already, I’m sure you all were too. We are pushing for 2 weeks. We are having our first all store meeting tomorrow, exciting! Truly pretty much all we are waiting on now is the flipping equipment that we ordered a month ago to finally just SHOW UP! But I guess its out of our hands. So, we are patiently waiting.
    Thanks for being excited

Great to hear I will have a place near home again. I had been a regular at the original until last November when I moved to the St. Paul area. I cannot wait to get in there wearing my Bulldog gear with pride. I will miss seeing the regular faces from uptown, including the awesome staff, but to have new spot so close to home is GREAT news. Congrats Matt and everyone else…

Just went by today and the sign in the window says “The countdown has begun – 8”. I assume it means days. I counted 40 taps! Heaven in Downtown Saint Paul.

  19. Mark says:

Passed again today. Talked to a guy cleaning the windows. He said that the opening will be on Nov 5.

  20. Mark says:

Guess I must be thirsty… ’cause I went by again today. The “countdown has begun? sign is again in the window, now with a “6”. Hopefully it means 6 days, placing the opening way before Nov. 5.
