Ryan Anderson (that's me!) is the editor & founder of MNBeer. Much has changed since the fall of 2005 and I'm proud to have been a part of it all. Sometime I'll tell you about my grand theory that links craft brewing to punk rock. Just ask.

Minnesota Brewery & Brewpub Map

The Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild has their map, Minnehaha Media had theirs… here’s our map. Contract breweries aren’t listed – there’s no sense in sending you to an office with no beer. Breweries & brewpubs that have yet to open are marked in yellow. In-progress breweries listed are, for the most part, in the latter stages.

Wine Barrels for Harriet Brewing & Other Delights

Barrel aging beer has been a buzzworthy topic over the course of the past couple of years. Bourbon. Whiskey. Rye. Sake. Wine.

A little secret? Some of my very favorite barrel-aged beers have spent time in wine barrels. Offerings from Fitger’s Brewhouse, Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery and Russian River quickly come to mind, though I have no doubt I’ve run across others that have wowed my tastebuds.

Needless to say, seeing today’s newsletter from Harriet Brewing caught my eye. I think some of their Belgian-style beers will definitely meld well with a little time in wine barrels.

Patience, padwan. From the sound of it, we shouldn’t expect anything until later this year or even 2013.  I’m looking forward to it.

Read the full text of their newsletter here. There’s mention of a number of events at the brewery including the release of their Oktoberfest on September 19th at the brewery. Check it out.

Oktoberfest Duluth Update

You may have already caught our piece on Oktoberfest Duluth a couple of weeks ago (link), but below you’ll find some updated information, including a little information about Oktoberfest Duluth returning to Bayfront Festival Park for 2013.

Short version. Oktoberfest Duluth, Sept. 21 & 22 at Fitger’s Brewhouse & Tycoons Alehouse. Beer, music, food, fun.

Achtung! The 3rd annual Oktoberfest Duluth takes place Friday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 22 to coincide with the opening weekend of Germany’s Oktoberfest in Munich.

Minnesota’s legendary Chmielewski Funtime Band will once again polka the party, joined by the International Mainstreet Polka Band and Adam & The Jolly Jammers. From the first tapping of Fitger’s Brewhouse Oktoberfest lager to the famous Chmielewski Fun Time Band’s party-raising polka’s, the 2012 Oktoberfest Duluth will once again bring out the beer drinkers and fun seekers.

Some will return to perform feats of beer-leticism in the Oktoberfest Games: Beer Pong, Hammerschlagen, Stein Holding Strongman Contest, Sauerkraut Eating Race and Team Boot Chug. There will also be a photo booth and raffle.

Mostly, revelers, many in lederhosen and dirndles, will drink giant Oktoberfest biers and enjoy a full German menu that includes brats, sauerkraut, schnitzel, baked chicken, hand-rolled pretzels, German potato salad and beer-cheese soup.

Oktoberfest Duluth is moving festivities closer to the Fitger’s Brewhouse Brewery for 2012. This year’s event will be held just four-blocks away at Fitger’s Brewhouse’s newest tap-house, Tycoons Alehouse (132 E Superior St, Duluth). What about Oktoberfest Duluth’s switch from Bayfront Park this year? Both the inaugural and the second years of Oktoberfest Duluth were held in Duluth’s incredible Bayfront Festival Park. To ensure the sustainability of the now regionally endeared event as Fitger’s Brewhouse continues to grow operations, Fitger’s Brewhouse last month announced a one-year shift in venue to Tycoons Alehouse.

And, believe it or not, planning is already underway for 2013 when the 4th annual Oktoberfest Duluth will return to the Bayfront Festival Park. With an all-out effort to organize local and regional breweries and food vendors, everyone expects to enjoy an expanded return of Oktoberfest Duluth to the outdoor setting. With the continued support of Visit Duluth and other organizations and businesses, this free autumn ethnic event will return to thrive for the enjoyment of visitors and locals alike.
