Ryan Anderson (that's me!) is the editor & founder of MNBeer. Much has changed since the fall of 2005 and I'm proud to have been a part of it all. Sometime I'll tell you about my grand theory that links craft brewing to punk rock. Just ask.

On this day in history… prohibition.

ProhibitionYes, on January 16th, 1920, the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution went into effect. According to Wikipedia:

Although it was highly controversial, Prohibition was widely supported by diverse groups. Progressives believed that it would improve society and the Ku Klux Klan strongly supported its strict enforcement as generally did women, southerners, those living in rural areas, and African-Americans. There were a few exceptions such as the Woman’s Organization for Prohibition Reform who fought against it. Will Rogers often joked about the southern pro-prohibitionists: “The South is dry and will vote dry. That is, everybody sober enough to stagger to the polls.” Supporters of the Amendment soon became quite confident that it would not be repealed, to the point that one of its creators, Senator Morris Sheppard, joked that “there is as much chance of repealing the Eighteenth Amendment as there is for a humming-bird to fly to the planet Mars with the Washington Monument tied to its tail.”

More updates from Brau Brothers

Here’s a little more information to compliment an earlier post about the only brewery in Lucan, MN. Excuse me while I consume the last bottle of Frame Straightener before Dawn gets home…

We are anxiously waiting for spring so that we can plant the hopyard, the freedom and flexibility it will afford us will be invaluable. We are planning two festivals here at the brewery to be held annually. The first will be Pheasant Opener weekend and we will release the Ring Neck Ale at the event. The second would be a spring event, possibly a “Brau Family Reunion” where for one day, anyone can be a Brau Brother, Sister, or Cousin. Any ideas for these would be appreciated. We could possibly even set up camping on site, as the nearest hotel is 25 miles away!

Let me know what you think about the Frame Straightener, the recipe for the next SBS beer is being finalized…

Take Care,

Dustin

Stub & Herbs beer tastings… Help!

Stub and HerbsJon over at Stub & Herbs is looking for some help from homebrewers to pair up with brewery reps to discuss beer styles and compare homebrewed and commercial versions of different styles of beer. Read on:

Stub and Herb’s is starting a monthly beer tasting and beer education in February. We are working on our schedule and could use some help. We would like to pair up a brewery rep and a member of the local homebrewing community at each meeting. We are hoping to pick a few different beer styles to discuss at each meeting and compare some homebrews vs some of the fine craft beers available at local bars and liquor stores. Anyone interested? Any homebrewers that want to get involved, please message me. The only requirements are:

*You have to have some beer for us to sample.

*You have to be willing to speak to a few of us about your homebrew techniques, recipes and setup.

Hope to hear from some of you.

Thanks,

Jon Landers
