Schell’s Update

Here’s a little update from Dave at Schell’s:

Zommerfest was *finally* packaged today.  Never underestimate the red-tape you need to go through with the federal government just because you decide to use honey in the recipe.

The honey itself came from Harris Honey Company in Madelia.  Harris is a great guy–65 years old, retired from beekeeping.  That means he only works about 70 hours a week during the season.  He only kept about 400 hives last year (he’s retired, after all!), and I was lucky enough to be able to hand-pick some honey for Zommerfest.  My past-life as a junior beekeeper in Fergus caused me to have a bit more than a pedestrian knowledge of honey, and I can tell you that his honey is excellent. I went with some basswood honey.  I’ve always been partial to basswood  for the minty character it has–just a bit more zip than clover.  I also enjoyed looking around the “plant” when I went down to pick it up.
Brought back some good memories from years ago.

Other than the Zommerfest, look for the Hefe in mid to late May.  We’ll be growing up the yeast in a couple of weeks and then do a full production batch around the end of April.  It’s a limited release, so make sure you get it while you can.

Cheers!

You may recall that I predicted that the Zommerfest recipe would be revamped. I was way off on the specifics, but Zommerfest will be different this summer.

Up in Smoke at Town Hall…

Town Hall’s India Brown Ale is gone, and if you missed, I’m sorry. I had my fair share on Friday evening. Fear not, as their Ballpark Beer, Minnesota Mild and Hefe are now on tap. Read on.

Hey All,
We started selling Hefe yesterday….warm weather is coming!

Monday 4/16 we will release Amarillo Amber. This is a well malty amber beer that is well hopped with the hard to get American Amarillo hop. Try a pint of this Monday from 5-6 just $2.

Pint club memberships go on sale Saturday. Remember they are life-long and include discounts on every house beer you buy (few exceptions). Further details within.
DO YOU LIKE SMOKED BEER??????? I sure do……
We snagged two kegs of Aecht Schenkerla Fastenbier. You know the Lent beer offering from the most famous smoked beer brewery in the world. First time on draft in Minnesota…..ever! Begins Friday 4/13.

Cheers
Mike

Barley John’s Triple Oat Stout Release

This should be another good one from the fine folks at Barley John’s. I really enjoyed last year’s release and look forward to this year’s version.

We will be having a Release Party on Monday for our latest seasonal – Triple Oat Stout. Enjoy $2 glasses of our Triple Oat Stout from 4pm-8pm next Monday.

Triple Oat Stout (6.5%abv): We used three types of Oats in this Oatmeal Stout recipe – malted, flaked and Golden Naked Oats. They give a smoothness to the beer that helps balance the sharp flavors of coffee, chocolate and roasted grains. Hopped 100% with English Fuggle hops.

AHA Nationals Needs Judges and Stewards!

If you’re a BJCP judge, they need you. If you’re not a total buffoon, you’d probably make a good steward. There’s beer involved… good beer even… Seriously, though, if you’re a beer fan, at the very least, consider stewarding. It’s a great way to learn more and meet some great people. Hell, you might even get to taste some beer!
