On June 15th Fair State Brewing will release their sour Saison Roselle in cans. This beer is brewed with Hibiscus and is a perfect beer for warm summer days. Speaking of Fair State, they will be hosting a sour beer festival on June 25 called Mixed Culture. At this event they will be tapping 7 new barrel-aged mixed culture beers and bringing out some oldies from the cellar. Oakhold will also be previewing some of their beers at the event. As you may know, Caleb Levar (Co-owner of Oakhold) has been helping Niko and the Fair State crew around the brewery with their sour program.

The Lift Bridge folks made a trip out to Fort Collins earlier this spring to collaborate on a Belgian Ale with Odell Brewing called Peaks and Prairies. This recipe utilizes Colorado Palisade peaches and Cardamom and was aged on oak. This release is a part of Taps & Tables which is a celebration of craft beer and restaurants in June. For $30 you and a guest will be able to enjoy food and the beer at participating restaurants with a portion of the proceeds going to charity. Click here for the schedule.

This is the 5th year for Pride Dabbler which will take place on June 24th from 5:30 – 9:30 pm. More than 50 breweries will be on-site pouring beers while food trucks such as Natedogs, The Anchor Fish and Chips, Hot Indian Foods and more will be selling food. Grab your tickets here.

Summit will be releasing the 22nd variety in their Unchained Series called Zingiber Cream Ale with ginger. Expect this to hit shelves and tap lines in the next couple of weeks.

Bent Paddle’s Lollygagger Pale Ale hits store shelves this week. 5% of all sales of this beer will go to helping Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores build a 100 mile mountain biking trail system called The Duluth Traverse. This copper colored beauty is sure to please those that appreciate a well-balanced Pale Ale.

Minneapolis Cider Week Celebrating 6 Years

The cider scene in Minnesota has been growing over the years and for the sixth time the fermented apple beverage will be celebrated for an entire week from June 6th – 11th. Minneapolis Town Hall will host the event once again and to kick it off all of the Town Hall locations will offer 12 ciders on tap at any given time.

When they started this six years ago there was only one cidery in Minnesota, now there are 14. Of those, Four Daughters, Loon Juice, Milk & Honey, Number 12 Cider House, Sapsucker Farms Yellow Belly, Sociable Cider Werks, Sweetland Orchards, and Wyndfall will all be featured at the Seven Corners location, Town Hall Tap, and Town Hall Lanes. The schedule for Minneapolis Cider Week is as follows:

Art-A-Whirl 2016

The Electric Fetus and Dangerous Man Brewing have teamed up again for a full day of music and beer on Saturday, May 21st from noon – 10 pm in the parking lot behind the brewery. This year the beer garden will only be serving Dangerous Man beer (last year they teamed up with a few breweries to serve their beers as well) which will include the highly anticipated collaboration beer they made with Surly called Blutpakt.

The food truck lineup is fantastic with the highlight being the BBQ truck Bark and the Bite. Rumor has it that they may just be selling chicken quarters right out of the smoker on Saturday. Oh, also….Chocolate Milk Stout makes for an excellent accompaniment to your breakfast.

Bauhaus will be hosting The Liquid Zoo which kicks off Friday, May 20th with the “Haus” band Viva Knievel. On Saturday Andrea Swensson from The Current will be there to get things going before a lineup of Jeremy Messersmith, The 4onthefloor, and Sonny Knight and The Lakers take the stage. That’s one hell of a party…

 

Art A Whirl 2016 2.5

Indeed will be hosting Whirlygig again and the big highlight will be Charlie Parr who is performing on Sunday, May 22nd at 5 pm. Nate Dogs will be on site slinging wieners along with Blue Door Pub throughout the weekend. The event goes Friday, May 20th through Sunday, May 22nd.

Grumpy’s will have the best music lineup on Saturday, May 21st with Babes in Toyland headlining a set that features Romantica and Mississippi Hot Club. Brian Oake from 89.3 The Current will be the emcee for the day. NE Tattoo will be on site in case you want some ink.

Art A Whirl 2016 3

Fair State will be hosting another Art-A-Whirl event but this time it will run both Friday and Saturday. The highlight will be Frankie Lee who takes the stage on Saturday, May 21st at 9 pm.

612Brew will have also have music both Friday and Saturday with a lineup that features Hapduzn and Sara Streitz on Friday. Saturday Nooky Jones and The Satellites will perform while Outlaw Grill and Market BBQ will be cooking up a storm.

Also, be sure to visit the many studios and support local art. After all, that’s what Art-A-Whirl is all about.

City Pages Beer Fest Moves to West End

City Pages Beer Fest has moved around over the years, this time to West End in St. Louis Park. The event is taking place from 5 – 9 pm on Saturday, May 21st and will feature over 50 breweries—many of them from Minnesota. Some of the highlights include Castle Danger, Steel Toe, Bad Weather, Oskar Blues, Clown Shoes, and Blacklist Artisan Ales out of Duluth. This is one of the longest running beer festivals (now in its 24th year) here in Minnesota and part of the proceeds this year will go to Finnegans.

The food lineup is solid as well with Rusty Taco, Urban Sub, Big 10 Restaurant, WildEarth Wood Fired, Pinstripes, and Cheer on Top Confections. Free and Easy Band will be performing throughout the festival along with accordionist Bill Koncar and Brian Boru’s Irish Pipe Band.

Dangerous Man and Electric Fetus Collaborate for Record Store Day

A typical brew day at Dangerous Man starts very early, and if you were to walk in you’d hear music blasting from the speakers. Operations Manager Hilari Bandow loves music so much that she worked with the Electric Fetus to set up a collaboration beer with the Minneapolis institution. “We always have music playing here, so it’s cool to have something [a special beer] to enjoy while you’re listening to music. Music for our brewery is woven in, and we’re all big vinyl collectors.”

The beer this year will be called Record Store Day Organic IPA and it’s brewed with Amarillo and Bravo hops. This beautiful looking beer is super citrusy and very refreshing so it will pair well with this awesome weather. Co-owner and head brewer Rob Miller had this to say about the beer this year. “It is a light refreshing, tropical IPA. A beer you would want to drink sitting outside on a spring day listening to your favorite Peter Tosh vinyl.”

Sarah Bonvallet who also owns the brewery and is the Creative Director loves music, and can often be seen at shows around town—usually with other staff members. “We have a deep love for music at Dangerous Man, whether it is jamming hard at the brewery to P.O.S. or our staff going to see shows together. So it feels like an honor to work with Electric Fetus, such a Minneapolis staple in the music community and be able to support each other.

The artwork for the event can be seen on the new merch which will be available for purchase at Electric Fetus. “We used a local designer and screen printer to create the art. The whole thing has Minneapolis dripping off of it, which we love” says Sarah. “The beer itself pushes that fruity IPA boundary to the max, which I think is indicative of the Electric Fetus and their support of experimental art on all levels” she says.

So when is Record Store Day? Well technically it starts at 9:00 am this Saturday, but according to Electric Fetus owner Aaron Meyerring and Store Manager Bob Fuchs people will start lining up outside the door at 6 pm on Friday night. “It’s like crazy. It has become this national holiday. Last year was the most fun I’ve ever had” according to Aaron.

By lining up, many of the people who show up to Record Store Day are looking for the exclusive releases, but for most people they are just looking to pick up something new and they use the day as an excuse to support their local record shop. At the Electric Fetus they go big for this event with in-store performances from local musicians, food trucks lined up outside, and even a crafting area for kids.

On the collaboration, Meyerring says that the fit just makes sense. “Two years ago on Christmas, I wanted to carry some craft beer merch and they [Dangerous Man] wanted to sell their stuff here. We crossover pretty well.”

“There’s no shortage of love for beer around here.”
