Bauhaus is Back Under New Ownership

It was only a few short months ago that Bauhaus announced they’d be closing for good. Now, that has changed. The folks at ABV Technology have taken over, and the results seem promising. They plan to honor the legacy of Bauhaus with their new vision of creating a space that welcomes people with all types of lifestyles.

CEO of ABV Technology Ben Jordan is excited to invite folks back into the taproom at Bauhaus. “I worked with Matt (Schwandt) and the team for 7 years and they wrote me my first check. Matt and I had been talking a lot about the business and we had an opportunity to step in. For us the taproom is about providing a show floor for what I can do. For me, it’s a place where people can come in and you try something with no alcohol and enjoy it. You might then ask… Can you do this for my beer?”

The trend of being Cali-Sober is all the rage right now along with people choosing to leave alcohol on the sideline all while enjoying the social benefits of going out with friends. The options at the new iteration of Bauhaus seem endless. Want an N/A beer? They have them. Want a THC seltzer? They have that too. For those that enjoy a beer after a long day at work, they certainly have those too. According to Jordan, they will also have cocktails made from the seltzer base, where they should come in around 15% ABV.

Expect some similar events like the ones that Bauhaus used to host such as Liquid Zoo durning Art-A-Whirl along with some brand new ones. “We are working on our own food program, we’ll do a pig roast, and possibly some seafood events. We are taking Backyard Boombox, and Liquid Zoo and bringing those back but also diversifying our events.”

Jordan also expects to see growth in the coming years, not just here in Minnesota, but nationally. “We have three legs on the stool. We’re focusing on having a great space serving great beer, and great food. We are going to get back into liquor stores and bars. We have seven new brands we’ll be introducing by mid-September. In terms of contract brewing, ABV has a special ability to do lower alcohol beers for others. We will be focusing on the things that we do well. ABV Technology grows by opening up 3, 4, or 5 new locations that can do that.”

ABV plans to keep the Bauhaus beers brewing with the same recipes and they’ve retained a lot of the staff that made it a special place for regulars and neighborhood folks to hang out. They put in some new picnic tables and put a fresh coat of paint on, but otherwise it’s the same esthetic that people having grown accustomed to over the years. Jordan emphasized that this is a place for everyone new and old.

With THC beverages potentially on the chopping block this fall, Jordan wants fans of locally made craft beer to be aware of the importance of keeping THC beverages alive here in Minnesota as many breweries say that these are a major source of revenue. “The great majority of people who haven’t tried THC might not understand how important these beverages are. We need the support of Minnesotans reaching out to their politicians about this. If this goes away, it’s a lot of lost revenue. If THC doesn’t go through, all the big breweries will come in and take over that market. Smaller breweries will be the ones to suffer. And that will mean that some of your favorite beers will go away.

ABV Technology has been working with other breweries and legislators to protect this source of revenue, and this excellent option for those that choose not to drink alcohol.

Stop in at any of these breweries and pick up a few crowlers. These 750 ml (size of a bottle of wine) cans of beer are perfect for the holiday dinner table or out back by the fire pit. They usually run anywhere from $7 – $10 each and are a great way to try beers from multiple breweries around town.

Dangerous Man Barrel-Aged Bombers – You know that delicious Peanut Butter Porter made by Dangerous Man in the Sheridan neighborhood? Yeah, they put that in Port wine barrels and aged it for months—and they’ll be releasing it on Saturday at the taproom. It’s gonna go very fast along with the Dopplebock (one of the best beers crafted by them) they aged in cedar rye whiskey barrels. The sale kicks off at noon and the bottles are priced at $20 each. Be sure to get there early if you want to pick these up. There will certainly be a line.

Bauhaus Over the Charts Series: Sky-Ten!

Next week, the fine folks over at Bauhaus Brew Labs debut their brand-spanking-new Over the Charts series, a series of beers that will offer a departure from the brewery’s more session-friendly offerings. “Over the Charts releases will be big, kickin’ beers with bold, bodacious flavors.”

The first beer from the Over the Charts series is a double IPA, Sky-Ten! With lots of hops and weighing in at 8.8% ABV, this beer should offer up a nice punch. Ready to try it? Nobody likes IPAs, do they?!

You’ll be able to find Sky-Ten! next week (starting 10/10) in 750 ml bottles at select retailers throughout the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota, as well as in the brewery’s Northeast Minneapolis taproom. You’ll also find it on draft at the taproom  and at select local bars and restaurants.

Bauhaus Bringing a Taste of Kentucky to US Bank Stadium

Bauhaus is teaming up with Revival to bring a taste of the south to US Bank Stadium this fall in the form of a beer called Slawhammer—a Kentucky Common Style Ale. Matt Schwandt who is the President and head brewer at Bauhaus spent some time living down in Nashville and was excited to work with Revival on this beer which will also be featured at their restaurants. “When I lived in Nashville, I learned that there are really only two beverage options for Tennessee hot chicken: sweet tea or a cold beer. So we figured, why not marry those ideas” he says.

Kentucky Common Style Ales were brewed pre-prohibition and they were  popular in that region of the country. They were also cheaper than other styles being sold in and around Kentucky during that time period, sometimes selling for half the cost of other varieties such as Stock Ale.

The Bauhaus version will have some citrus and black tea notes from the hops that were used in the brewing process. It’s extremely drinkable at 4.8 % ABV and should pair nicely with that phenomenal chicken sandwich offered at the stadium.

Nick Rancone who is a co-owner of Revival was happy to align with Bauhaus due to the product they put out, and their similar values. “We are thrilled about the partnership. Revival is all about tradition and modernity, and that is the same way we view Bauhaus. It’s so important to align with people that you respect and adore, and share values with, and it was most excellent that this collaboration came to fruition in the way that it did. We couldn’t have asked for a better partner” says Rancone.

Look for this beer to debut at US Bank Stadium in 16 oz. cans on August 10th, and on tap at The Revival/Corner Table family of restaurants in the Twin Cities in the following weeks.

Places and Events to Check out Over All Pints North Weekend

All Pints North is one of the best beer fests held here in Minnesota for a few reasons. The first reason is that Duluth is one of the most picturesque cities in all of Minnesota, and there isn’t a better city to host such an event. The second reason is that Duluth is home to my favorite bar scene, partially due to all of the music that takes place on stages big and small across town. The third reason is that the beers that breweries bring to this event are some of the best being made here locally.

While the main event is always going to be the beer festival, you owe it to yourself to make a weekend out of it and check out the town on Friday. If you see me around, be sure to say hello. I’ve highlighted some of the events going on the night before the big event.
All Pints Eve Hootenanny at Bent Paddle – This event starts at 2 pm on Friday and will feature some rare beers which will of course include Double Shot Double Black. There will be a happy hour (3-5 pm) with 90.9 The Current which will be followed by bands from 7-11 pm.

Fulton Beer Presents This is a Cool Party at Pizza Lucé Duluth – Admission to this event (9:30 pm until midnight) is free and it will feature the bands Reflectivore and Dem Atlas. Grab a few beers and some pizza and prepare to party.

All Pints Eve at Sir Ben’s Tavern on the Lake – Live music, a restaurant pop up, and special tapping highlight this event on Friday from 4 – 9 pm. Beers from NorthGate, Bauhaus, Surly, Indeed, Castle Danger, Schell’s, Fair State, Dangerous Man, 612Brew, Beaver Island, and Bent Paddle will all be available for purchase. There will also be games and a kombucha station.

The Rathskeller at Tycoon’s – It’s no secret that this basement hangout is the place to be over the weekend. The Rathskeller is where people in the beer community hang and with good reason. The beer selection is top notch, and the whiskey is some of the best you’ll find around town. One thing to note is that the fire code dictates that only a certain number of people can be down there (it’s in the basement of Tycoon’s) so you may have to wait in a line to get in.

Places to eat over the weekend include Duluth Grill (fantastic breakfast), Northern Waters Smokehaus, Fitger’s Brewhouse, New Scenic Café, Tycoon’s, and Taste of Saigon.

And finally some pro advice: Don’t overdo it on Friday night or Saturday might be daunting. I’ve done this a few times. Perhaps I’ll never learn…
